Hungarian Wine: Bulls Blood

Egri Bikaver

Hungary remains one of the last European wine producing countries yet to be fully appreciated. "The best-kept secret of the old wine world"

Exclusive Hungarian wine varieties now in the UK

With 22 wine regions, growing hundreds of varietals, Hungary offers a multitude of great wines to explore.

My first visit to Hungary, after a trip to Budapest to meet the family, we caught a train to Historic Eger, one of the most beautiful towns in rural Northern Hungary, perfectly situated on the edge of the beautiful Bükk Mountains national park and world famous Egri wine region.

A theory suggests Eger's name comes from the Latin word: "ager" (Earth).

The mountainous region surrounding Eger has always been suitable for settlements, with many archaeological findings from the early ages of history.

The first generation of conquering Hungarians occupied the area of Eger at the beginning of the 10th century. The establishment coincides with the activity of the first king, 'Saint Stephen'.

The towns rich history continues with Mongol invasion in 1241, when the town was ransacked. After the withdrawal of the Mongols, Eger flourished & reached the peak of its medieval development in the l4/15th centuries. By the early 16th century Eger was handed to the expanding Ottoman Empire resulting in the only minaret in Hungary, built at the end of the 17th century

The towns population has grown since 1688, when it was only 1200 people. Wine production flourished & has reached its brightest period. The growing area is now twelve-times larger and continues to produce a good quantity of fine wines, Especially its world famous Egri Bikaver or better known from the 1970's as - "Bulls blood"

We know have a selection of Egri Bikaver in our new online shop.
